An SSL certificate is only necessary for websites that process sensitive information. A must for shopping websites that handle payments themselves (i.e. not use PayPal as a third party payment processor).

In order for any SSL certificate to work your web host must allow you to use them and have the ability to use them. Another requisite is that you must own a private IP address - a problem for shared web hosts as normally shared web hosts run a number of different user accounts under one IP address; you cannot use this IP address. You can generally buy an IP address for a small cost (roughly £2 per month - don't pay a lot of than that...consider changing). For other types of paid web hosting, this should not be a problem.
