An SSL certificate is only necessary for websites that process sensitive information. A must for shopping websites that handle payments themselves (i.e. not use PayPal as a third party payment processor).

In order for any SSL certificate to work your web host must allow you to use them and have the ability to use them. Another requisite is that you must own a private IP address - a problem for shared web hosts as normally shared web hosts run a number of different user accounts under one IP address; you cannot use this IP address. You can generally buy an IP address for a small cost (roughly £2 per month - don't pay a lot of than that...consider changing). For other types of paid web hosting, this should not be a problem.

Starting up a any website needs some sort of web hosting. Paid web hosting (as opposed to free) is definitely better in terms of reliability and customer service - definitely important if you are running an e-business.

There are different levels of web hosting and in general most startups and personal users go for a 'shared' package whereby you pay for using part of a server, of course the limitations include not being able to ask for 'specific' software to be installed as it would affect everyone (normally 100s of small scale users) on a server.

If you need to use specifics then a small scale option, without having your own dedicated server, is to use a VPS (Virtual Private Server) which you share a server with a few others (normally less than 20 users), but under partitions meaning you can specify what software you wish to use. The downside of a VPS or even dedicated servers (you are the only user on that server) is that they are relatively expensive and more often than not are 'unmanaged' which means you must look after it yourself and your web host will not fix problems unless the problem is with them. You can, however, opt for 'managed' service but that comes at a hefty monthly cost!

Namecheap offer a number of these services but are by no means the best, nor necessarily the cheapest - depends on individual requirements.
